**Please** Take One Minute to make a HUGE difference!

In an attempt to reduce California’s deficit, Governor Brown has proposed a substantial weakening of the Hayden Act, including sections that require shelters to care for homeless and lost companion animals for up to six days before euthanizing them. This holding period is crucial to allowing lost dogs and cats to be reunited with their families or adopted when they are unclaimed or abandoned.

Please take a moment today to contact Governor Brown and your state legislators here: http://ow.ly/8Fcn2 Urge them to oppose any legislation that will remove existing protections for homeless and lost companion animals. It took me just a minute or two... very simple, and SO important!

Violet...

violet

Violet came into rescue on January 25th, from Los Banos. She is a beautiful girl, and so sweet. Unfortunately, she had a large mammary tumor right next to her 'armpit'. It was a little raw from the skin rubbing, and from ulceration..... My heart sank when I saw it.

We got an appointment to go to the vet at 5pm, with Dave Gordon at Mission Pet. He told me that it could not be completely removed, and that within no more than a month's time it would become unmanageable. We made the decision to let her go, to euthanize her... the same day that she arrived.

Run in Peace, Powder Pete

Cliff and Lisa have been caring for Powder Pete for a long time. This senior Peke came to us from the Martinez shelter. Because of his failing vision and horrid ear infections he was not really adoptable. Pete has been one of our Hospice dogs, living a good life with C & L for two years.

Pete began to decline a few months ago.... his appetite was erratic, and this was the beginning of a slow decline.

Today Cliff and Lisa are letting Pete go. It is obvious that his quality of life has diminished to a place where the kindest thing we can do is to euthanize him. It is never easy..... these critters give SO much love.

Pups @ Play!

“Hafiz,
Who can you tell in this world
That when a dog runs up to you
Wagging its ecstatic tail,
You lean down and whisper in its ear,
...
‘Beloved,
I am so glad You are happy to see me.

Beloved,
I am so glad,
So very glad You have come.’”

~ Hafiz

Labor Day Thoughts......

It's 9:30 on a national holiday.... I've had my coffee and am sitting at my desk, about to read emails, clean and sort through papers. No, not at home, but in the office, and this caused me to ponder a bit about life and the meaning of work.

Earlier this morning, a man at Peets told me "my dog had a very hard time as a pup... she was chained in a yard..." How easily I glossed over his words, because I hear them *ALL the time*... not a single day goes by that I'm not reading or hearing about neglect to animals. But looking down at this chow mutt's gentle expression I realized that this is EXACTLY why I rescue animals. I also realized that I've grown a bit numb to his story.
