Date Adopted: Mon, 03/02/2009
Breed: Australian Shepherd/Cattle DogWhy I chose this dog:
Lucy is an eight year old rescue from Merced, CA. We hadn't planned on adopting a dog quite that old, but when I read her story and saw her picture, that was that; two days later we met her and brought her home. She was pretty terrified at first - she had been abused and we think she was simply a "farm dog" who had never really been someone's pet (she didn't understand any commands and was really scared of people). She'd been neglected and her health was bad - she had chronic ear infections, flea bites and and a large tumor which the doctor suspected was cancerous. These problems, plus her age, made me afraid that poor Lucy would never find a home. Her foster mom Nicole had written in her profile that they would keep her if no one adopted her, but that she really deserved one on one attention and love. I agreed!
We could tell from the start that she was trying so hard to be a good dog! It hasn't been easy but for almost a year now she has continued to improve and become more comfortable with us and her friends at the dog park. Turns out she had never been spayed (!!!) so we had that done and at the same time had her tumor removed (it was biopsied and turns out it is the lowest grade malignancy - much less aggressive than the vet had initially feared!). We've also gotten her ears under control - the effect those infections had been having on her energy and personality was unbelievable! It's awful to think of how sick she must have been for so long.
However today Lucy is healthy and active! She has her slower days, and her cranky days, but she also has days where she is playful and goofy. She's learned sit, down, and shake.... we're working on others. She's also aware that she is not supposed to herd bikers/skateboarders/joggers/kids/etc. - it's still a struggle though! ;) Most importantly she cuddles with us, lays on us, and lets us cuddle back (this is a 180 degree change from the terrified dog we brought home!). She will always be shy and we have to be careful with her, but now she is a happy, spoiled dog. We love her so much!!
Thank you Wonder Dog for rescuing Lucy!!
